Cuckooland Museum

Cuckooland Museum is a brand identity project created for a museum celebrating the craftsmanship, individuality, and heritage of traditional cuckoo clocks. The visual identity was inspired by the distinctive character of cuckoo clocks, where no two designs are exactly alike, influencing a branding system centred around contrast, personality, and playful visual storytelling.

The brand mark combines two contrasting typeface styles that would not traditionally be paired together, reflecting the eclectic and handcrafted nature of cuckoo clock design. Another key influence was the reveal mechanism commonly associated with cuckoo clocks, which informed the concept behind the exhibition posters. Each poster features a reveal element that uncovers imagery connected to the theme of a specific exhibition, creating a sense of interaction and surprise within the visual system.

The identity also draws from the ornamental shapes and detailing often found on cuckoo clocks while remaining rooted in their Black Forest heritage through the use of a traditional woodland-inspired colour palette. The project extended across both physical and digital applications, creating a cohesive museum experience that balanced heritage with contemporary graphic design.
